article_macleod2017_author_macleod_laura_and_bergen_andreas_and_storey_margaret-anne_title_documenting_and_sharing_software_knowledge_using_screencasts_journal_empirical_software_engineering_year_2017_month_jun_day_01_volume_22_number_3_pages_1478--1507_abstract_screencasts_are_used_to_capture_a_developer_s_screen_while_they_narrate_how_a_piece_of_software_works_or_how_the_software_can_be_extended._they_have_recently_become_a_popular_alternative_to_traditional_text-based_documentation._this_paper_describes_our_investigation_into_how_developers_produce_and_share_developer-focused_screencasts._in_this_study_we_identified_and_analyzed_a_set_of_development_screencasts_from_youtube_to_explore_what_kinds_of_software_knowledge_are_shared_in_video_walkthroughs_of_code_and_what_techniques_are_used_for_sharing_software_knowledge._we_also_interviewed_youtube_screencast_producers_to_understand_their_motivations_for_creating_screencasts_as_well_as_to_discover_the_challenges_they_face_while_producing_code-focused_videos._finally_we_compared_youtube_screencasts_to_videos_hosted_on_the_professional_railscasts_website_to_better_understand_the_differences_and_practices_of_this_more_curated_ecosystem_with_the_youtube_platform._our_three-phase_study_showed_that_video_is_a_useful_medium_for_communicating_program_knowledge_between_developers_and_that_developers_build_their_online_persona_and_reputation_by_sharing_videos_through_social_channels._these_findings_led_to_a_number_of_best_practices_for_future_screencast_creators._issn_1573-7616_doi_10.1007_s10664-017-9501-9_url_https:doi.org_10.1007_s10664-017-9501-9
